Dr. Kathryn Johnson will address "It Is the Worst of Times; it Is the Best of Times" at the Opening Convocation of the 159th Spring Semester at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, February 7, 2013. Convocation will take place in the Frank H. and Fannie W. Caldwell Chapel. The public is invited to attend.
"All around us we see evidence that, taken seriously, could lead us to despair - for our church communities, our vocational futures, our world," said Johnson.
"Yet at the same time there are new beginnings also all around, inviting our discernment and our collaborations,” Johnson added. “How do members of a community of theological reflection encourage and help one another to read these signs of the times and find direction toward a joyful and faithful future?"
Johnson first joined the Louisville Seminary faculty in 1984. She returned last spring after spending four years in Geneva, Switzerland where she served as Assistant General Secretary for Ecumenical Affairs and interim Director for Theology and Studies for the Lutheran World Federation, the global body that includes the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This semester, Johnson will teach History of Christian Experience, sections I and II.
Now back at Louisville Seminary, Kathryn continues to learn about world Christianity. In January, she traveled to Kerala, India, with a group from the Master of Arts in Spirituality program, a joint effort with Bellarmine University. She has a deepened commitment to faithful life in the Church - to honoring its diversities and seeking to heal its divisions.
