COURSE DESCRIPTION

Senior certified couples therapists in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and Gottman Method Couples Therapy will provide an overview of assessment and intervention that these two emotion-centered, research-based couples therapy methods offer clinicians.

We will discuss these methods' respective uniquenesses and also their interconnected, fertile common ground for transforming couples' relationships. We will also offer an overview of the more than 100 years of combined research, clinical experience, and wisdom of Sue Johnson and John and Julie Gottman.

The second half of this day-long training will offer attendees (through clinical examples and videos) methods for intervention, as well as descriptions and explanations of the choice points available to an EFT and/or Gottman couples therapist intervening with any given couple.




LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Understand the fundamental aspects of the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy as evidence-based couples therapy practices.
  • Understand methods of assessment and interventions for the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy.
  • Understand the role of the therapist in these evidence-based couples therapy models as a facilitator for couples to engage dyadically
  • Understand the role of emotional regulation and emotional attunement in successful couples treatment, not only within the couples' relationship itself. but also within the relationship between therapist and clients.
  • Understand the common threads between the models as well as the distinctions between them.

Jonathan Shippy
Jonathan Shippey, LMFT, Master Trainer and Sr Certified Gottman Therapist
Senior Certified Gottman Couples Therapist & Master Trainer with the Gottman Institute

Jonathan Shippey has been a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice since 1999 and has served clients in the Louisville, Kentucky area since completion of his Master of Arts in Marriage & Family Therapy from Louisville Presbyterian Seminary in 1997. Jonathan is a Clinical Fellow with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and is a Certified Gottman Relationship Therapist and Workshop Leader, having been personally trained by Drs. John and Julie Gottman at their Seattle Relationship Institute. He regularly leads the “Art and Science of Love” weekend workshop for couples and the Level 1 and 2 Gottman Method trainings for clinicians. Jonathan often serves as a roving therapist when the Gottmans lead couples workshops in Seattle and is among a select few whom John and Julie regularly invite to assist with private retreats in their home on Orcas Island, WA. Jonathan is also currently pursuing certification as an Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist, having completed an externship in EFT with Dr. Sue Johnson and the four EFT Core Skills workshops. Jonathan’s specialty in the field of couples therapy has led to several national speaking engagements, including a presentation for US Navy Seal Team Five, as well as a workshop at the national convention of the American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy.

Patricia Sheldon
Patricia A. Sheldon, LCSW, LMFT, Certified EFT Therapist
Co-owner, Couples Care Center, Louisville, Kentucky

Patricia holds a Master of Science in Social Work with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Louisville. Her work has been presented at the national and state levels. She works with individuals, couples, families and groups to create a safe, confidential and trusting relationship where they work together to solve life's many challenges. Her experience includes, but is not limited to, working with children and adolescent behavioral challenges, parenting difficulties, couples work, infidelity, family life transitions, grief and loss, sexual abuse including adult survivors, and trauma work.

Michael Taylor
Michael Taylor, LMFT, Certified EFT Therapist, Approved EFT Supervisor
Co-owner, Couples Care Center, Louisville, Kentucky

Michael is a dynamic presenter, consistently receiving excellent reviews for his informative and engaging content. He speaks on a variety of topics, including communication, marriage, addiction issues, motivational topics and employee concerns. He has appeared on local television discussing couples issues and stress management. WFPL’s "State of Affairs" has archived recordings on the web of presentations on “Kids & Depression”, “Parenting Teenagers”, and “Dealing with Holiday Stress”. Michael has provided education services to employers, churches and hospitals since 2001. Michael has been in the mental health field for over 30 years, specializing in couples therapy and treatment of adolescents and adult trauma victims, as well as adults with depression & anxiety issues. He is certified in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples Counseling (EFT is the latest research-based treatment for couples available, with over 75% success rate). He is co-facilitator of a Victims of Infidelity therapy group, and is trained in hypnosis therapy.
