Black Church Studies Program

The Black Church Studies Program at Louisville Seminary offers three tracks of study: a certificate program for students not enrolled in a degree program, a concentration in the Master of Divinity degree program or in the Master of Arts (Religion) degree program, and a concentration in the Doctor of Ministry degree program.

Master of Divinity and Master of Arts (Religion) Concentration in Black Church Studies
The Black Church Studies concentration enables students enrolled in the Master of Divinity or Master of Arts (Religion) degree programs to take graduate level courses in history, theology, ethics, homiletics, Bible, and pastoral counseling. Louisville Seminary students who enroll in the Black Church Studies program may choose four courses from the BCS curriculum. In addition, students will be required to take four weekend intensive seminars. Upon graduation, Seminary students will receive both a Master’s diploma and a Certificate in Black Church Studies.

Doctor of Ministry Concentration in Black Church Studies
Fulltime pastors with three years of post-M.Div. experience, and experienced counselors, chaplains, denominational, and para-church officials are invited to apply for the Doctor of Ministry Degree Program at Louisville Seminary. The D.Min. degree program offers tracks in Advanced Practice of Ministry, Pastoral Care and Counseling, Interim Ministry, and Black Church Studies. The new Doctor of Ministry with a Black Church Studies focus consists of four required seminars and three advanced professional (elective) seminars taken in Black Church Studies. Louisville Seminary will offer three courses that will fulfill this concentration during its January and June courses.

Certificate Program in Black Church Studies
Our program offers weekend seminars for local pastors and lay leaders, leading to a certificate in Black Church Studies. The Black Church Studies Certificate Program requires the successful completion of eight seminars taken over the course of two years. The Certificate program can be completed in a two-year sequence by taking two classes in the fall semester and two classes in the spring semester. Seminars will be offered on weekends, so one can complete this program with minimal disruption in a student’s family and work schedule. After the successful completion of the seminars, students will receive a Certificate in Black Church Studies from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.
