Arch TaylorLouisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary alum and longtime supporter, the Rev. Archibald “Arch” Taylor, Jr., died Monday, August 14, 2017. He was 96 years old.

Taylor (BD ’45, ThM ’54), received the Louisville Seminary Distinguished Alum Award in 1988. The award is presented to Louisville Seminary alums who have made a lasting impact on the church and society through outstanding professional, volunteer, or philanthropic accomplishments.

“Arch was a great saint of the church, a man of extraordinary integrity, with a keen intellect and a huge and generous heart,” said Louisville Seminary President Michael Jinkins. “Truly, I cannot imagine Louisville Seminary without him. We are all grateful for his many contributions to the mission of our church and to the life of the seminary community. Our prayers are with his family in this time of profound loss.”

Shortly after receiving his Master of Theology degree from Louisville Seminary, Taylor spent his career as professor of bible (1955-1985) and president (1978-1982) of Shikoku Gakuin University (Zentsuji, Kagawa, Japan). Following his retirement in 1985, Taylor went on short delegations, twice to Nicaragua with Witness for Peace and Habitat for Humanity, and once to Israel/Palestine with Presbyterian Peace Fellowship and Christian Peacemaker teams.

In 2010 he donated $25,000 to The Women’s Center at LPTS in honor of his first wife, Margaret Taylor (also a Louisville Seminary alum), who was a lifelong advocate for women’s issues and who supported the Women’s Center in its earliest days. Arch Taylor was also a charter member of Louisville Seminary’s Caldwell Society, and a past member of the seminary’s Alum Board of Directors.

“(Attending Louisville Seminary) was really one of the very best things that happened to me,” said Taylor in 2010. “My whole spiritual pilgrimage has been a growth.”

Taylor shared his experiences and theological insights in three books: Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima & Beyond: Subversion of Values (Trafford, 2005); God for All: The Biblical Foundation of Universal Grace (Wipf & Stock, 2013); and A Goodly Heritage: The Life and Times of a Presbyterian Minister, Missionary, Activist (Xlibris, 2014).

Details about memorial services for Arch Taylor are forthcoming.
