James A. Todd, Jr., former Louisville Seminary Trustee, dies

Jim ToddJames A. Todd, Jr., 87, of Mountain Brook, Alabama, died on May 5, 2016. Todd served on the Louisville Seminary Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2009.

“Jim's strong and insightful leadership on the board was always tempered with kindness, understanding, and good humor,” said Louisville Seminary Board Chair Lant Davis. “We all join in prayers of comfort for his wife, Mary Margaret, and in prayers of gratitude for Jim's life and service.”

Born on July 31, 1928, in West Virginia, Todd received a scholarship to West Virginia University and attended Harvard School of Finance.

Todd (pictured), a veteran of the Korean War, had a long and successful professional career initially with E.I. duPont Nemours and Co. He was instrumental in the mergers and acquisitions of the following companies: Atlas Powder Co., United Affiliates Corp., and Birmingham Bolt Corp. He was Chairman and CEO of Birmingham Steel Corp., and in 1993 was named Steel Maker of the Year. Todd also served as President and CEO of CanAm Corp.

In addition to his service as a Louisville Seminary Trustee, Todd served on several boards of directors and in leadership positions with distinction including the National Mining Association, American Mining Congress, National Manufacturers Association, Auburn University President's Council, and the Boy Scouts of America - Birmingham Area Council, among many others. He also served on the vestry at Independent Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama.

“Jim represented the very best qualities of a trustee of Louisville Presbyterian Seminary,” said Louisville Seminary President Michael Jinkins. “His intelligence and wisdom were complemented with a gracious spirit. His board colleagues are universal in their grateful remembrance of him.”

Todd is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Margaret; children: Candace Todd Ewert of Houston, Texas, Mark Todd (Camie) of Dallas, Texas, and Jenny Todd Reed (Randy) of Mountain Brook, Alabama; grandchildren: Todd Ewert (Tia), Courtney, Hunter, and Hayley Todd, Sanders, Andrew, Hutton, and Edward Reed; and two great grandchildren, Charlotte and Savannah Ewert.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 13, at 11 a.m. at Independent Presbyterian Church (3100 Highland Ave. South, Birmingham, AL 35205) with visitation from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Independent Presbyterian Church.
