Three Louisville Seminary Students Awarded Apollos Scholarships

Aug 13, 2012
Three students pursuing their Masters of Divinity at Louisville Seminary have been awarded $3,000 scholarships from the Omaha Presbyterian Seminary Foundation toward their annual seminary expenses and another was named an alternate for a $7,500 award for students willing to serve small Presbyterian churches west of the Mississippi.

Lynn M Hasselbarth, of New York; Joanna E. Hipp, of North Carolina; and Joshua B. Miles, of Oklahoma, were among ten students receiving the $3,000 Apollos Scholarships from the Nebraska foundation, which provides financial assistance to those seeking to become ordained leaders in the Presbyterian Church (USA).

Debra Broyles Trevino, of Harlan, Kentucky, was named one of three alternates for the Marilyn A. Jackson Award, given to students who are or will be serving small Presbyterian churches, with a first preference for minority students in the Synods of Lakes and Prairies, Mid-America, Rocky Mountain and the Sun. Alternates are chosen as not all recipients are able to fulfill the requirements for the scholarships.

Hasselbarth, from Schenectady, New York, will be entering her second year at Louisville Seminary this fall. She is pursuing a dual degree, a Master of Divinity and Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy. She is a member of Hamilton Union Presbyterian Church in Guilderland, New York, and is under the supervision and care of the Albany Presbytery.

Hipp, of Vass, North Carolina and a member of Cameron Presbyterian Church in Cameron, NC, begins her second year of seminary classes this fall. She is under the care and supervision of the Coastal Carolina Presbytery.

Entering his final year of training for a Master of Divinity at Louisville Seminary this fall, Miles is a member of First Presbyterian Church of Tulsa where he is under the care of Eastern Oklahoma Presbytery.

This year’s recipients were selected from a field of 70 applications. The Omaha Presbyterian Seminary Foundation has awarded Apollos scholarships since 1954, distributing more than $3.5 million in funding to students. Applications are submitted by members of Presbyterian Church (USA) congregations who are under the care of their presbyteries as either an Inquirer or Candidate for ministry. Applicants must be accepted by one of the 10 theological institutions under the jurisdiction of the PC (USA).
