Professor Marty Soards will teach New Testament in Zambia

by Louisville Seminary | Apr 04, 2012
New Testament Professor Marion L. Soards has received a grant to teach at the Justo Mwale Theological University College in Lusaka, Zambia during June and July, 2012. The grant, which is being generously funded by an individual who wishes to remain anonymous, will enable Dr. Soards to assist the University, and ecumenical institution with historical ties to the Reformed Church in Zambia, in some of their curricular offerings.

“I am delighted to work in this new context and to have the chance to learn more than I’ll be able to teach. This opportunity is especially timely with regard to Louisville Seminary’s work in its Doors to Dialogue program, which is seeking to prepare men and women for ministry and leadership in a world of religious difference through all components of the Seminary’s curriculum,” said Soards.

Professor Soards will teach New Testament 2, a study of the Book of Acts and the Pauline Corpus.

Soards has taught at Louisville Seminary since 1990. Publishing more than 60 articles in theological dictionaries and professional journals, he is the author of more than 20 books, including The Passion According to Luke: The Special Material of Luke 22 (JSOT Press, 1987); The Apostle Paul: An Introduction to His Writings and Teaching (Paulist Press, 1987); the 12-volume set, Preaching the Revised Common Lectionary (Abingdon, 1992-1994), which he co-authored with T. B. Dozeman and K. K. McCabe; The Speeches in Acts: Their Context, Content, and Concerns (Westminster John Knox, 1994); Scripture and Homosexuality: Biblical Authority and the Church Today (Westminster John Knox, 1995); and I Corinthians (Hendrickson Publishers, 1999). He has also been an editor of The New Interpreter’s Bible Project, Mercer Library of Biblical Studies, the Journal of Biblical Literature and the Catholic Biblical Quarterly.

He has been a Fellow of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Association of Theological Schools in the U.S. and Canada, the Catholic Biblical Association of America, and the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation in Germany. He is active in the Society of Biblical Literature, the Catholic Biblical Association of America, and the International Society for New Testament Studies, Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas.
