An interment service for President Emeritus C. Ellis Nelson will be held at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Friday, August 12, 2011, at 10 a.m. The service will take place at the Seminary’s Memorial Garden, which is located behind the Frank H. and Fannie W. Caldwell Chapel, where Dr. Nelson wished his ashes to be buried.
Nelson, who served as the sixth president of Louisville Seminary from 1974 to 1981, died June 9 in Austin, Texas. He was 95 years old. Considered a prominent leader in theological education, an elder statesman in the Presbyterian Church, and one who has helped shape the entire field of Christian education, Nelson taught generations of Presbyterian Church pastors and Christian educators at most U.S. Presbyterian seminaries, including his alma mater Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and Louisville Seminary, in a career that spanned 70 years.
Louisville Seminary President Michael Jinkins and former president John M. Mulder will officiate the brief service that will be attended by family members and is open to friends of the Nelsons and of Louisville Seminary. A reception will follow in Fellowship Hall.
