Dean K. Thompson concludes Presidency, August 31, 2010.

The Rev. Dr. Dean K. Thompson, the eighth President of Louisville Seminary, will conclude his leadership of Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary on August 31, 2010.

The Presidency of Dean K. Thompson holds many markers that will point to the vitality of Louisville Seminary for years to come, including some of the following: Administration, faculty, staff, and student development have culminated in one quarter of the current faculty hired during his tenure; 25% racial ethnic student body; the first African American administrators in the Seminary’s history, and the largest entering class in nearly a decade last year. In Trustee development, more than 60% of the current Board came to service during his tenure. Regarding the transformation of the Seminary’s Scholarship for Excellence Program, eight fully endowed and four partially endowed scholarships have been added to the previously existing four. In the year prior to Dr. Thompson’s arrival, the Seminary distributed $102,000 in its Scholarship for Excellence Program. This fall, in the 2010-11 academic year, the Seminary will bestow $525,000.

As reported in an earlier story, the LPTS community and constituent groups celebrated the significant and transformational presidency of Dr. Thompson over the course of this past year, which resulted nearly $1 million in support of new scholarships and financial support for students in honor of Dr. Thompson’s leadership. Story | 6/3/10: Nearly $1 million in scholarship support honors Thompson Presidency.

In addition to preparing for presidential transition throughout the summer months—archiving presidential papers and correspondence—Dr. Thompson worked with President-elect The Rev. Dr. Michael Jinkins on transition and orientation matters, as well as attending the LPTS luncheon, July 7, 2010, at the 219th General Assembly in Minneapolis, where he introduced alums and friends to Dr. Jinkins. During the month of July, Thompson served as Theologian-in-Residence at Montreat Conference Center in North Carolina and presented lectures on “Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Costly Grace Embodied,” “Pearl S. Buck: Compassionate Angel,” and “Reinhold Niebuhr: Prophet of Biblical Relevance.” He also made several trips, continuing efforts to introduce Louisville Seminary to new friends and to build scholarship support.

Dean and Rebecca Thompson will reside in Black Mountain, N.C., with their three collies, Bliss, PJ, and Reagan.
