Choral director certification held at LPTS

by Louisville Seminary | Jul 27, 2010
Choral directors of young singers in churches and church schools enjoyed an opportunity to earn certification specific to their craft at the Choristers Guild Institute which took place at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, July 23-26, 2010.

The Seminary hosted the second of a three-summer certification program of the Choristers Guild, a Christian organization for leaders of children's choirs and youth choirs. The Choristers Guild Institute will offer its third session next summer, on the Louisville Seminary campus, July 22-27, 2011.

Although various certification programs exist for musicians serving in public schools, “there is no such program for those who direct children’s choirs in the church,” said Rebecca Thompson, Director of the Institute and spouse of Louisville Seminary President Dr. Dean K. Thompson.

The certification program is designed and implemented with the assistance of funds provided by Lilly Endowment Inc. through a Worship Renewal Grant from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship.

Nearly 100 people attended the 2010 institute which was led by a world-class faculty, including Anton Armstrong, Helen Kemp, C. Michael Hawn, Madeline Bridges, Heather Potter, Amanda Smith, Andrea Baxter, Karol Kinard Kimmell, and Chris Nemec.

The Choristers Guild, formed in 1949 in Los Angeles, Calif., provides direct assistance to children’s choir and youth choir directors through such things as training and educational opportunities, published resources, and national office support.
