Responsibilities for care, placement process of Presbyterian Church (USA) students decentralized

Jul 10, 2009
Beginning with the new academic year this fall, Presbyterian students at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary will experience a guiding hand toward their preparation for ministry in the Presbyterian Church (USA) from a unique partnership between faculty, administration, and staff. The Seminary has decentralized some of the assignments related to the care and process of Presbyterian Church (USA) students for placement in ministry.

The following colleagues, under the supervision of Seminary Dean Dr. David C. Hester, will partner with the Field Education Office to assist Presbyterian students seeking ordination in the Presbyterian Church (USA):

  • The Director of Alum & Church Relations, Rev. Leah Bradley (MDiv ’97), will provide Placement Services for our Presbyterian students, including maintaining and developing relationships with presbyteries to understand better what is required of our students under care, assisting them in many aspects of that process, and serving as mentor and advocate in the placement process once students are approved to seek a call.
  • The Dean of Students, Rev. Kilen Gray (MDiv ’02), will coordinate Ordination Exams for our Presbyterian students.
  • Visiting Professor Rev. Dr. Cliff Kirkpatrick will host the Presbyterian Connection, a monthly meeting of current PC(USA) students, to share experiences of the Presbyterian process as students move from Inquirer to Candidate to the point of being approved to seek a call to ministry.
  • As reported earlier, Rev. Dr. Dianne Reistroffer is serving as Interim Director of Field Education (see, Dianne Reistroffer to direct Field Education Program).
  • The Field Education Office will continue its role in preparing and providing the annual reports between the Seminary and each student’s Committees on Preparation for Ministry and Presbytery.

"I am grateful to these gifted members of the Seminary community for their willingness to help our PC(USA) students as they discern and prepare for their roles as pastors and leaders in the Presbyterian Church," said Hester. "It is exciting to be able to provide our students with the kind of insights and support that they will enjoy from Dianne, Cliff, Kilen, and Leah."

Until now, these multiple roles were all very ably performed by Dr. Garnett Foster, who retired as Director of Field Education and Ministry Placement, May 31, 2009.

Please contact these individuals directly for information and support. Questions regarding the distribution of these assignments may be directed to the Seminary Dean, Dr. David C. Hester.
