Transgender Day of Remembrance observed Nov. 20

by Louisville Seminary | Nov 19, 2008
The Transgender Day of Remembrance is being observed on the Louisville Seminary campus today in two events: a panel discussion of “Transgender Experiences of Faith Communities" and a Memorial Service that names and remembers transgender lives lost to violence during the past year. A reception will follow the service in the Winn Center, during which the 2008 Butterfly Award for outstanding contributions to the local transgender community will be presented.

“We observe the Transgender Day of Remembrance because we believe that every human life, made and given by God, is precious. Every human life deserves our recognition — recognition of our kindred humanity, our relationship, and our responsibility. No human life is disposable, no human life negligible — although the powers of the air (Ephesians 2:2) would have us believe otherwise,” states Heather Theissen (MDiv ‘00; ThM ‘02), who is acting director of the Women’s Center at Louisville Seminary. The tenth-annual Transgendered Day of Remembrance also is sponsored by More Light.

As part of the Transgender Day of Remembrance Service, participants will name and memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder in Boston on November 28th, 1998, — like most anti-transgender murder cases — has yet to be solved.

“In naming and remembering individuals who have died — been killed — because of their gender presentation, we affirm our common humanity (. . . the communion of saints . . .), and our faith that death is not the final verdict (. . . the resurrection of the body . . .), but that a gracious God makes and gives life anew ( . . . and the life everlasting . . .),” writes Thiessen on the Women’s Center blog (wimminwiselpts.wordpress.com).

These events are open to the public.
