A community gathering for the Advent and Christmas season
Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary will present a Festival of Lessons and Carols for Advent and Christmas on Friday, December 8, at 10 a.m. in the Frank H. and Fannie W. Caldwell Chapel. Admission is free, and the public is encouraged to attend.
This treasured annual tradition at LPTS will feature The Seminary Choir, The Seminary Ringers, and readers from the Seminary community. The musical worship service is under the direction of Thomas Goetz, adjunct professor of music and director of The Seminary Choir. The congregation joins in singing favorite hymns and carols for Advent and Christmas as we celebrate the holy season.
The service will also feature the Roger Wood Puckett pipe organ, and the handbell choir will perform with Malmark three-octave bells, a gift to Louisville Seminary from Edward J. Schickli Jr. in memory of his wife, Nancy Yocum Schickli.
The Seminary choir and ringers include Seminary employees, members of the student body and faculty, and individuals from the Louisville community. These individuals rehearse each week and also provide worship leadership at chapel services during the academic year.
Goetz, who is the director of music ministries at Second Presbyterian Church, brings to Louisville Seminary a wide range of experiences including: leading choral music at First Presbyterian Church in Arlington Heights, Ill.; organ scholar, assistant conductor and instructor in organ at Northwestern University; associate professor of music at Trinity International University in Miami, director of music and organist at Miami’s First United Methodist Church and director of music ministries at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Louisville. He has degrees from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. (MM and DM), Florida International University in Miami (BA) and another bachelor’s in sacred music from Trinity International University, Deerfield, Ill. Goetz has conducted numerous choir and orchestra performances throughout the U.S., Europe and the Caribbean.
An “Apples for Advent” reception, featuring delicious foods made with apples, will be held in the Winn Center immediately following the service.
