Religions, Cultures, and Liberation in Brazil (TH 4413)
Summer 2010 (June 29—July 14)

Professors Cláudio Carvalhaes and Christopher Elwood will guide participants through explorations of the diverse cultural, religious, and theological landscape of Brazil today.

Before departing for Brazil, students will complete a series of readings to prepare them for informed encounters on the ground. The excursion includes Rio de Janeiro and Salvador in Bahia, and visits to a number of different religious communities—Roman Catholic, mainline Protestant, Pentecostal, and Afro-Brazilian; meeting with religious leaders; holding conversations with influential theologians and with seminary students; and speaking with representatives of groups working to relieve poverty and responding to HIV/AIDS.

Participants will deepen their understanding of the changing face of Christianity in the southern hemisphere and develop tools for interpreting and responding faithfully to a world of religious and cultural difference.
