History, Religion, and Culture in the Land of the Bible
Led by Patricia K. Tull, A.B. Rhodes Professor of Old Testament
January 10-27, 2009
| We read about ancient Israel in Scripture. We hear about modern Israel in the news. It’s a land of deep contrasts—not only ancient but contemporary, not only holy but contested, a land of godly hope and ungodly hates. We will read, explore archaeological sites and holy places in Israel and Palestine, and we will visit with Christians, Jews, and Muslims living in the land today. We will learn about the complex religious history of the region. We will contemplate not only the past but the present—the sources of conflict, and the strategies by which a wide variety of people seek to live day by day in this most unusual home.
We will travel through the Galilee region, by the Jordan River and the Dead Sea. We will spend several nights in Bethlehem and in Jerusalem. We will meet and talk with a variety of Jewish and Palestinian leaders who are working for peace with justice. We will hear their stories, see the land through their eyes, and learn their perspectives on the conflicts, American involvement, and what we might do to help.
Cost, including roundtrip fare from Louisville, twin room accommodations, bus transport, tour guides, lecturers, entrance fees, dinners, breakfasts, and tips, is $4000.
