The 158th Commencement marked a significant milestone in the Seminary’s history. Several men and women were recognized for their continuing studies on behalf of the church as the Certificate in Black Church Studies was awarded for the first time to six students. The Rt. Rev. Vashti Murphy McKenzie, Bishop of the 13th Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, was the Commencement speaker. Her address was entitled "Which One of You?" Bishop McKenzie serves as the 117th elected Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. Her historic election in 2000 represents the first time in the 200-year history of the AME Church that a woman had obtained that level of Episcopal office.

Black Church Studies Student Testimonials

Yolanda Wilson“The Black Church Studies Certificate Program has exceeded my expectations. The professors are well-versed and passionate about their subject matter. I recommend that every leader in the church attend. It's a life-changing experience. Everywhere I go, whether to a conference, a women's ministry meeting, or a one-on-one conversation with multi-cultural people, I have encouraged others to enroll in the program.”—Yolanda Wilson

Jim Holland“The Black Church Studies offers all people a chance to understand more clearly the history of the African American Church (where they were, where they are today, and the obstacles that were there to overcome) but also what needs to be done for the community as a whole to move forward. I highly recommend that all churches provide opportunities for members of their congregations to participate in the Black Church Studies Program …” —Jim Holland

Lee Young"The Black Church Studies program has just magnified my understanding of the Black Church in so many ways... learning about the history of the Black Church from our textbook and gleaning so much from our professors allows me to have a deeper insight into the very essence of the Black Church. I would recommend this program to others so that they can experience personal and spiritual growth in order to be a better servant to their church for Jesus Christ."—Lee Young
