THOMAS
H. TROEGER is Dean of the School of Theology and the Ralph
E. and Norma E. Peck Professor of Preaching and Communications
at Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado, where he
has taught courses in homiletics, worship and congregational
song since 1991.
Ordained
in the Presbyterian Church in 1970 and in the Episcopal Church
in 1999, he is dually aligned with both traditions. Author
of more than a dozen books in the fields of preaching and
worship, and a frequent contributor to journals, he is also
a poet whose work appears in the hymnals of most denominations.
He is well-known for his contributions to hymnody and homiletics
through numerous publications as well as for a wealth of hymns
and poetry that are used by composers, even more widely adapted
to standard hymn-tunes by parish musicians, and used by individuals
and groups for private devotion.
He
is the author of Preaching While the Church is Under Reconstruction
(Abingdon Press, 1999) and Wrestling with the Patriarchs:
Retrieving Women’s Voices in Preaching with Lee McGee
(Abingdon Press, 1996), and he contributed to John S. McClure’s
Best Advice for Preaching (Fortress Press, 1998). His more
liturgical works include Borrowed Light (Oxford University
Press, 1994) and, with composer Carol Doran, New Hymns for
the Life of the Church (OUP, 1992), and New Hymns for the
Lectionary (OUP, 1986).
Thomas
Troeger is one of the most important American figures in the
liturgical renewal movement and is in great demand for workshops,
lectureships, and special worship services. He has led conferences
and lectureships in worship and preaching throughout North
America and in Holland, Australia, and Japan. Much of his
teaching and scholarship has focused on the function of the
imagination in the life of faith.
In
addition to several memberships and positions with organizations
such as the Academy of Homiletics, the Hymn society in the
United States and Canada, and the North American Academy of
Liturgy, Troeger is a professional flutist, and he has hosted
“Seasons of Worship,” a United Methodist television
broadcast from Nashville, Tennessee. |
